Circumcision and STIs
To be clear, they think that men should support these efforts, too, because they believe circumcision offers STI protection regardless of gender. But does circumcision really have such a dramatic impact on sexual health?
And is it even a good idea to use public health as a justification for routinely cutting off part of the body? It may be that circumcision offers limited HIV protection to straight men in Africa, where the rate of infection is very high as many as 10 percent have it in some countries and effective tools for preventing HIV like condoms and PrEP are scarce. In the United States, however, the situation is radically different.
The rate of HIV is much lower to begin with less than one-tenth of one percent of the population has it and safe-sex tools are easier to come by. We now have a vaccine against HPV, however, that works in men and women alike. Given how effective this vaccine is, it raises the question of whether advocating for circumcision to prevent HPV is worth it. By contrast, in Britain, the rate is 9. However, since introduction of the HPV vaccine, rates of cervical cancer and HPV infection have started dropping in America, which tells us that vaccination—not circumcision—is the key to combating this problem.
There are questions to be raised about how much public health benefit there is to male circumcision, especially when weighed against the potential risks. Some studies report complication rates as high as two percent and, in extremely rare cases, disfigurement and death have occurred.
Maybe not. Several cultures practice female circumcision, in which the clitoris and, in some cases, other parts of the vulva are removed. What if people started using these data to say that female circumcision was justified because there are sexual health benefits?
You can find data showing health benefits of a lot of procedures, but this does not necessarily mean that they should be done. Benefits to public health must be weighed against ethics.
Some ethicists argue that no one should have the right to decide what happens to your genitals but you. In order to address this, California lawmakers recently proposed a first-in-the-nation ban on medically unnecessary surgery for intersex children in order to recognize their autonomy over their bodies.
This bill raises an important question: If we agree that intersex children should have final say over surgical alteration of their genitals, should everyone else have the same right, too? Sexually Transmitted Infections and Male Circumcision: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Circumcised men should be as vigilant in preventing oncogenic HPV infection as those who are uncircumcised, new research suggests. Circumcised participants in a study presented at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association were twice as likely as their uncircumcised counterparts to have either of two HPV strains associated with penile cancer, researchers said. Their findings are not consistent with previous research. Daugherty said the high proportion of men in the United States who are circumcised could account for the prevalence of HPV in that population. Nonetheless, he said, the results show that circumcision alone is not a preventive measure.
Three randomized controlled trials have shown that male circumcision provided by well trained health professionals in properly equipped settings is safe. Male circumcision provides only partial protection, and therefore should be only one element of a comprehensive HIV prevention package which includes: the provision of HIV testing and counseling services; treatment for sexually transmitted infections; the promotion of safer sex practices; the provision of male and female condoms and promotion of their correct and consistent use. Back to Lifestyle and exercise. There is some evidence that circumcision reduces the risk and spread of STIs. The main reason for this is the large difference in rates of STIs between the two countries. Further research in countries with a more comparable rate of STIs would give a better indication. When having sex, a condom remains the best way to avoid contracting an STI. It is also important not to conclude that the results would be the same in other subgroups, such as men who have sex with men, or men who are circumcised as newborns. It could be that the benefits of circumcision differ among different groups.
Circumcision and Sexually Transmitted Disease Prevention: Evidence and Reticence
Despite the wide availability of condoms and the fear of HIV infection, sexually transmitted diseases STDs continue to be a serious public health concern. In the medical literature about preventive measures, circumcision is rarely if ever mentioned as an effective preventive measure: however, articles promoting the routine practice of circumcision invariably mention the surgery's benefit of reducing STDs. One author refers to over medical articles supporting this thesis [ 1 ]. In the present review, the medical literature is examined to determine what influence, if any, circumcision has on STDs.
Supriya D. We examined the effect of male circumcision on the acquisition of 3 nonulcerative sexually transmitted infections STIs. We evaluated the incidence of STI among men aged 18—24 years enrolled in a randomized trial of circumcision to prevent human immunodeficiency virus HIV infection in Kisumu, Kenya.
The Reason Some Doctors Argue Men Should Get Circumcised
Circumcision is one of the oldest surgical procedures and the most common surgical procedure performed on males. It is practiced for three main reasons: ritual or religious meanings, prophylactic hygienic purposes, and therapeutic indications. Male circumcision is advocated as an efficacious prevention strategy against sexually transmitted diseases. One of the main biological mechanisms responsible for the lower human immunodeficiency virus HIV infection rate in heterosexual circumcised men is the protective effect of keratinization of the glans.SEE VIDEO BY TOPIC: HIV, Circumcision & The Fight Against AIDS
All Specialties. Back to all news. Male circumcision reduces HIV risks, as well as some sexually-transmitted infections from heterosexual exposure, according to a recent review study. A systemic review of 60 publications found highly consistent evidence that male circumcision helps protect against herpes simplex virus type 2, chlamydia, syphilis, cervical dysplasia, and even cervical cancer. Medium-consistency evidence indicated circumcision helped protect against human papillomavirus and its low-risk form, and a low consistency of evidence was found for circumcision being protective of HIV.

Metrics details. However, the biological mechanisms by which circumcision is protective remain incompletely understood. Furthermore, we provide evidence that the genital microbiome may be an important driver of this immune activation. However, the biological mechanism by which circumcision confers this protection remains poorly understood. The foreskin constitutes a fold of skin that covers the coronal sulcus, glans, and urethral meatus of the non-erect penis, and the distal aspect of the penile shaft on the erect penis. The folding of the foreskin on the non-erect penis creates a sub-preputial space between the inner foreskin and glans that is largely anaerobic, and which is eliminated on the erect penis. By removing the foreskin surgically, circumcision permanently eliminates the sub-preputial space and exposes the glans to air on both the erect and non-erect penis. Early speculation as to the protective biological mechanism of circumcision assumed that the relatively sheltered inner foreskin had a thinner layer of keratin stratum corneum than the outer foreskin and the penile shaft.
The claim that circumcision reduces the risk of sexually transmitted infections has been repeated so frequently that many believe it is true. A systematic review and meta-analyses were performed on studies of genital discharge syndrome versus genital ulcerative disease, genital discharge syndrome, nonspecific urethritis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, genital ulcerative disease, chancroid, syphilis, herpes simplex virus, human papillomavirus, and contracting a sexually transmitted infection of any type. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, and human papillomavirus are not significantly impacted by circumcision. Syphilis showed mixed results with studies of prevalence suggesting intact men were at great risk and studies of incidence suggesting the opposite.
